Brazil’s Maria Rita Gets Two Grammys at Madison Square Garden

Maria Rita, daughter of the late Elis Regina. Brazil’s most celebrated singer, has won two prizes at the Latin Grammy Awards’ Brazilian side, which for the fist time were held in New York’s Madison Square Garden.

"Second," her CD, was chosen as Best Brazilian Contemporary Pop Album while Rodrigo Maranhão’s song "Caminho das íguas," interpreted by her took the prize for Best Brazilian Song. Daughter of Elis Regina and composer César Camargo Mariano, Maria Rita was born in São Paulo on September 9, 1977.

Other Brazilian winners in the ceremonies in which Colombian superstar Shakira reigned with five awards, including Album of the Year, Best Song and Best Record, were Paralamas who won for best Brazilian Rock Album with "Hoje" and Marisa Monte who won for Best Samba/Pagode Album with "Universo ao Meu Redor."

Roberto Carlos took a prize in the Best Romantic Music Album category and Best Singer-Songwriter Album was given to Chico Buarque for his CD "Carioca."

Country duet Chitãozinho e Xororó saw their album "Vida Marvada" win the Grammy for Best Brazilian Roots/Regional Album while the award for Best Christian Album (Portuguese Language) went to "Aline Barros & Cia" from Aline Barros,

For the surprise of many, Adriana Calcanhoto won over veteran Latin Grammy winner Xuxa – she  got the prize in 2002 and 2003 – in the Best Latin Children’s Album category with the CD "Partimpim." Calcanhoto was also disputing with the Mexican singer Tatiana besides Xuxa.
