Brazil Vows to Care for Its Water in International Conference

The president of the World Water Council, Loic Fouchon, praised Brazil for the operation of the National Water Agency (ANA), on stating that it represents an advance with regard to the questions raised at the  Rio-92 conference.

The good words came at the conference Integrated Management of Water Resources in the International Scope, held yesterday, November 23, in Brazilian capital Brasília.

The environmental challenges of the 21st century were discussed at the meeting, where Brazil agreed to take care of its springs, rivers and water basins. Among the measures adopted since 1992 are the creation of the ANA and the enactment of the Water Law.

According to the president of the agency, José Machado, the objective is to create a national policy to control all the water resources.

He recalled that due to the lack of control in the use of water, various basins are already compromised. "Examples of this are the São Francisco river and Piracicaba river basins," he said.

During the conference, the participants discussed the generation of public awareness to responsible use of water resources, as an alternative to guarantee the quality of the available water.
