Coffee Prices Rise 26% and Brazil Boosts Its World Share to 29.7%

Brazilian coffee for export Brazilian coffee exports totaled US$ 423.21 million in October, a 26.6% rise over the same month of last year, according to data disclosed this Monday, November 5, by the Brazilian Coffee Exporter Council (CeCafé). A total of 2,790,863 60-kilogram bags were exported, virtually the same amount as in October 2006. The growth rate was only 0.3%.

The director general at CeCafé, Guilherme Braga, said foreign sales have resumed their regular pace last month, as informed by the press office at the organization. In the accumulated result for the year, coffee exports totaled US$ 3.14 billion, 22% more than in the same period of 2006. The volume shipped from January to October was 22,967,429 bags, a 6.6% increase.

In the last 12 months the country shipped 28,772,940 bags and posted revenues of US$ 3.86 billion from coffee exports. Furthermore, according to the International Coffee Organization (ICO), the Brazilian participation in the global market increased from 28.9% to 29.7% during the same period.

According to the CeCafé, the average price for a bag of coffee reached US$ 152 in October, a 26% rise in comparison with the same month of 2006.

Germany, the United States and Italy were the three main markets for Brazilian coffee from January to October, and 70% of total Brazilian exports were shipped through the Port of Santos, in the coast of the southeastern Brazilian state of São Paulo.
