Brazil’s Ana Moniz Makes Purses that Are Fun and Irreverent

Din Din wallets from Orange, Brazil Brazilian Ana Moniz, a designer from Rio de Janeiro, in southeastern Brazil, turns car seat upholstery, construction chains, and plastic from bathroom curtains, mixed with synthetic leather or fabric, into colorful, fun purses.

"I like to play by displacing materials from their original," says Ana, who created the Orange brand four years ago. Since then, her creations have been exported to Norway, Spain and France.

The irreverent, fashionable style of her creations has led Ana to focus as well on the market of Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, which houses many foreigners. "I believe that they have a clientele there that is interested in differentiated, exclusive items," bets the designer.

According to her, all of the items are limited editions and made in using selected raw materials and specialized labor. The designer works in her atelier in the Lapa neighborhood, in Rio de Janeiro, where she creates and models the items, one by one. Manufacturing is outsourced to seamstresses.

Aside from the purses, Ana Moniz has just launched a special line for households, with aprons, placemats, trays and cushions. "The aim is to use the same concept for household items," explains the designer.

In the domestic market, Orange sells its purses at stores in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Goiânia and Brasília.
