Brazil’s Lula to Meet Chavez and Kirchner

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva participates today in the inauguration of the new President of Uruguay, Tabaré Vásquez.

According to a note issued by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Relations, Lula’s presence is intended to strengthen trade relations between Brazil and Uruguay and to further negotiations on various projects sponsored by both countries.

Among these projects there is the construction of a new electric power transmission line between the two countries. Brazil is responsible for over 60% of the energy consumed by Uruguayans.

President Lula plans to use his visit to Uruguay to meet with other heads of state. Tomorrow he will get together with his Peruvian counterpart, Alejandro Toledo, and will hold a joint meeting with the presidents of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, and Argentina, Néstor Kirchner.

Lula will also take part in the inauguration of an Ambev beer factory in the Uruguayan city of Paysandú. Ambev – Brazilian Beverage Company – is the largest beverage company in Latin America and the seventh largest in the world.
