Brazil: Brasília Declaration Defends Falklands Talks

One of the issues mentioned in the BrasÀlia Declaration, document with the conclusions of the Summit of South American – Arab Countries, which ended yesterday, is the sovereignty of the Falklands (Malvinas) Islands, under dispute by Great Britain and Argentina.

Heads of State or Government asked both countries to reestablish negotiations in order to reach, as soon as possible, a fair, pacific, and long-lasting solution for the controversial sovereignty issue of the Falklands.

The Declaration also criticizes the inclusion of the Islands in the map of the European Union: “the inclusion of the Malvinas, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands as associated territories to Europe in the Annex II related to Title IV “Association of Overseas Countries and Territories” of Part III of the Constitutional Treaty of the European Union is not in accordance with the existence of the sovereignty controversy about these islands.”

Uruguay at WTO

Participating countries of the Summit also emphasized the importance of supporting a candidate of a developing nation for the post of director-general of the World Trade Organization (WTO), “as a way of democratizing and expanding its participation on the conduction of the main organisms of the multilateral trade system.”

The position of WTO’s Director-General is being disputed by Uruguayan candidate, Carlos Pérez Del Castillo, and by the ex-Commissioner of the European Union, Pascal Lamy.

The Brasília Declaration, reiterates support for the strengthening of the WTO and for the “successful” conclusion of negotiations regarding the Doha Development Agenda, benefiting developing nations, also in sectors where they are more competitive.
