Brazil’s Lula Praises Bolivia for Keeping Democracy on Hard Times

Brazilian President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has sent the new President of Bolivia, Eduardo RodrÀguez Veltzé, a message wishing him success.

Rodriguez is a former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court who became president when Carlos Mesa resigned last week and the presidents of the Senate and the House, next in the line of succession, both stepped down.

In his message, Lula said he was “especially satisfied to see that the political leadership in Bolivia, even in the midst of an enormously complicated situation, was able to reach an agreement on presidential succession, showing that the spirit of democracy remains strong.”

Lula went on to say that he was certain Rodriguez would lead Bolivia with “balance and wisdom” as the Bolivian people seek democracy with social inclusion.

Lula concluded his message by promising that “Bolivia can count on Brazilian cooperation and friendship.”
