Brazil Senate Starts Inquiry on Money Laundering Through Bingo

A Parliamentary Investigative Commission (CPI, Comissão Parlamentar de Inquérito) has been installed in the Brazilian Senate to look into the use of bingo games in money laundering and other illegal activities in Brazil.

Attempts to install the Bingo CPI began last year when Waldomiro Diniz, a top aide to José Dirceu, then presidential chief of staff, was filmed negotiating a bribe with an underworld figure known as Carlos Cachoeira (Charlie Waterfall) who has been involved in lotteries and gambling.

Diniz has been charged with “a lack of administrative probity” by federal prosecutors.

The leader of the opposition party PFL (Partido da Frente Liberal – Liberal Front Party) in the Senate, José Agripino, from the state of Rio Grande do Norte, says that the Bingo CPI is going to clear up the questions people have about corruption in Brazil.
