Lula’s Party Wins in Six State Capitals

The mayors of 11 state capitals were elected yesterday in the first round of voting in Brazilian municipal elections: Belo Horizonte (state of Minas Gerais), Recife (Pernambuco), Aracaju (Sergipe), Macapá (Amapá), Rio Branco (Acre), Palmas (Tocantins), Rio de Janeiro (Rio de Janeiro), São LuÀs (Maranhão), João Pessoa (Paraíba), Campo Grande (Mato Grosso do Sul) and Boa Vista (Roraima) ”“ where the winner got more than 50% of the valid votes.

In four other state capitals ”“ Macapá (Amapá), Rio Branco (Acre), Palmas (Tocantins) and Boa Vista(Roraima) ”“ there will not be a second, runoff election on October 31 because those cities have less than 200,000 voters.

The PT won in six state capitals – Belo Horizonte, Recife, Aracaju, Macapá, Rio Branco and Palmas; the PFL was the winner in Rio de Janeiro; the PDT in São Luís; the PSB in João Pessoa; the PMDB in Campo Grande; and the PPS in Boa Vista.

This is the way it will be for the second, runoff vote on October 31: the PT will run in nine states; the PSDB in seven; the PFL in three; the PSB in four; the PST and the PMDB in two; and the PPS, PTB and PP in one each.

Other parties that did not win in the first vote, but will dispute state capital runoffs are (with number of state capitals in parentheses): PPS (5), PP (3), PTB (3), PV (1), PSL (1), PSDC (1) and PL (1).
