Brazil’s Congress to Open Records of Officials Accused of Corruption

It will not be necessary for the Parliamentary Investigation Commission (CPI) that is investigating a corruption scheme in the Post Office to order officials of the PT to open their bank, tax and telephone records.

Thursday, the president of the CPI, senator Delcídio Amaral, from the PT (Workers Party, the party of President Lula), received a document authorizing the CPI to inspect several records.

They include documents of the president of the PT, José Genoíno, the ex-treasurer of the PT, Delúbio Soares, the ex-general secretary of the party, Sílvio Pereira, and the former presidential chief of staff (chefe da Casa Civil), deputy José Dirceu.

The document authorizing the CPI to inspect the records arrived just as the CPI was debating whether or not to order the records to be opened.

Critics, however, are saying that opening these account is not enough. According to them, what needs to be opened are the records of the Workers Party.
