Lula Blames Gossip for Brazilian Crisis

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva declared that he was indignant because of the gossip (“disse-me-disse”) that he sees as the cause of the political crisis in the country.

Lula reaffirmed what he has said before: everyone guilty of crimes will be punished.

“If someone commits an error, no matter who he or she is, he or she has to pay for it,” said the President, speaking at a ceremony launching a proposal to create a new university in Bagé, in the southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul.

As for corruption, Lula said that during his government twice as many people had been arrested by the Federal Police than in the last 20 years before he took office.

Lula also referred to the millions of Brazilians who voted for him. “They put their trust in me and I promise that if it depends on me there will be no corruption in this country. I intend to eliminate corruption as soon as possible,” he said.
