Brazil Again World’s Top Beef Exporter with Over US$ 3 Billion in Earnings

Brazil’s beef exports in 2005 should surpass US$ 3 billion, according to the president of the Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture’s (CNA) Permanent National Beef Cattle Forum, Antenor Nogueira.

This estimate is based on the sector’s results between January and July, when the country’s revenues from beef exports totaled US$ 1.752 billion, 33% more than the US$ 1.313 earned over the same period last year.

Export volume amounted to 1.299 million tons, 35% more than the 965 thousand tons exported during the first seven months of 2004. These data indicate to Nogueira that Brazil will maintain its position as world leader in beef exports for the third year in a row. Beef exports earned US$ 2.457 billion last year.

Over the 12-month period from August, 2004, to July, 2005, revenues from Brazilian beef exports totaled US$ 2.896 billion, 41% more than the US$ 2.057 billion registered between August, 2003, and July, 2004. In terms of volume, the overall total came to 2.188 million tons, 42% more than the 1.539 million tons exported between August, 2003, and July, 2004.

Brazil currently exports beef to more than 140 countries. The chief markets for fresh beef between January and July of this year were Russia (US$ 296 million), Egypt (US$ 159 million), and the United Kingdom (US$ 120 million).

The biggest buyers of processed Brazilian beef in the first seven months of 2005 were the United States (US$ 85 million), the United Kingdom (US$ 75 million), and Venezuela (US$ 25 million).
