Brazil Praises Israel for Gaza Evacuation and Makes Itself Available to Peace Process

Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Relations released a note affirming that the Brazilian government is paying close attention to the execution of the plan to remove settlers from the Gaza Strip and in four colonies in the Northern Transjordan Region.

The action is in response to a decision taken by the Israeli Parliament on October 26, 2004. The operation began on Monday, August 15.

“Brazil commends the Israeli government’s decision to carry out the Disengagement Plan, despite the complexities of the operation. The Brazilian government shares the international community’s concern that the Palestine Authority will be able to take over complete control of the Gaza Strip, peacefully, after the Jewish settlers leave,” the note says.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Relations, Brazil repeats its understanding that the Gaza Strip Disengagement Plan represents an initiative capable of making a significant contribution to the Middle East peace process.

“Brazil urges all parties involved to advance the dialogue to this end, within the scope of the Peace Road Map.”

The note also informs that Brazil reaffirms its willingness to make a contribution, “if the parties are interested,” on behalf of the efforts of the international community to achieve a fair and lasting peace in the region.

“A peaceful solution that, on the one hand, provides for the creation of a sovereign Palestinian State that is economically viable and geographically cohesive, and, on the other, the Israelis’ right to exist as a State and enjoy security, within internationally recognized frontiers.
