Consumption in Brazil Grows 3.1%

Since March, 2004, Brazilian families have been consuming more. This finding is part of a study by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) on the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the total wealth produced by the country.

These results were announced Wednesday, August 31.

“The increase in the GDP is largely a function of the increase in family consumption,” according to Mônica Baer, an economist with the MB Associates consulting firm.

The IBGE study indicates that family consumption rose 3.1% in the second quarter, continuing a trend that began in the second quarter of 2004.

Overall, the GDP was up 1.4% in the April-June quarter, compared with the period between January and March.
