In New York, Brazil’s Lula Talks About World Hunger and Poverty

Today and tomorrow, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will be in New York for the 60th anniversary of the United Nations where he will attend meetings on the Millennium Goals that were approved in September 2000 by 191 nations with the objective of reducing extreme poverty by the year 2015.

This morning Lula will attend a conference on development financing where Patrus Ananias, minister of Social Development and Hunger Combat, will present a progress report on the goals in Brazil.

There are eight of them: eradicate extreme poverty and hunger; universalize elementary education; promote gender equality; reduce infant mortality; improve maternal health; combat AIDS/HIV, malaria, tuberculosis and other “diseases of poverty”; work toward sustainable development and environmental protection; and establish a worldwide partnership for development.

Lula will also participate in the 3rd Security Council summit where he will make a speech. The summit is expected to approve resolutions on conflict prevention in Africa and terrorism measures.

Lula will be one of the guests at a lunch for chiefs of state and government offered by UN secretary general, Kofi Annan. Following that he will hold a press conference to present the New York Declaration on Action against Hunger and Poverty, which was drawn up jointly with France, Chile, Germany, Algeria and Spain.

At 4 pm Lula has a meeting scheduled with the presidents of India and South Africa. After that he will have a private meeting with Kofi Annan. In the evening Lula will dine at the Brazilian Permanent Mission to the UN.
