Brazil Wants Better Integration Between South America and Caribbean

The Brazilian Minister of Foreign Relations, Celso Amorim, called on the member countries of communities such as the Mercosur, the Andean Community of Nations (CAN), and the Caribbean Community (Caricom) to intensify their integration as a way to advance integration in the South American Community of Nations (CSN).

Amorim participated Thursday, September 29, in the opening ceremony of a Work Meeting of CSN foreign ministers, at Itamaraty, the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Relations, in Brasília.

The Peruvian chancellor, Oscar Maúrtua, opened the meeting and affirmed that his country, which occupies the temporary presidency of the CSN, is committed to the South American integration process. "More than ever, integration is an imperative at present," he declared.

The chancellors’ Work Meeting is just one of the meetings scheduled during the First Meeting of Heads of State of the South American Community, which gets underway officially Friday, September 30, in Brasília.

Founded in December, 2004, in Cuzco, Peru, the CSN is formed by Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Surinam, Uruguay, and Venezuela, in addition to Brazil.
