Brazil Offers to Help Bring Venezuela and US Closer Together

Brazil’s presidential aide for International Affairs, Marco Aurélio Garcia, says he spoke with Robert Zoellick, the deputy secretary of State of the United States, about the possibility of Brazil acting to bring the US and Venezuela closer together.

"I know that Venezuela would like that because it has wide-ranging economic relations with the US. On the other hand, Brazil is always willing to help," said Garcia.

Zoellick and Garcia also discussed the situation in Latin America in general and specifically the elections in Bolivia. "Brazil hopes the election in Bolivia will result in a favorable institutional solution to the problems there. The international community should provide more economic assistance to Bolivia," declared Garcia.

With regard to the OAS, Garcia said that Brazil would like to see the organization act "in a more subtle manner, perhaps through ‘friends groups’ especially in dealing with delicate problems.

The idea was to ensure that the OAS would not be seen as meddling in the internal affairs of countries," explained Garcia.
