Brazil’s Lula Says Zero Hunger Will Be Big Success When Whole World Adopts It

In his weekly radio program, "Breakfast with the President," Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva presented, today, a roundup of the activities of the Family Grant program. He said that the goal is to reach 8.7 million families by the end of this year.

"We have already attained 100% of the municipalities in Brazil. In October we are benefiting eight million families, and we are committed to be serving 8.7 million families through this program by December 31," he said.

The president recalled that the Family Grant is part of the Zero Hunger program, to which US$ 11.9 billion (27 billion reais) have been allocated in the last two years. The program combines the activities of federal, state, and municipal governments and civil society.

"The Brazilian nation is aware that through the Family Grant we are enabling people who didn’t have access to anything to begin to have access to what is essential for the survival of Brazilian families," he affirmed.

Lula said that the program, in addition to permitting access to food, ensures school attendance by children and medical accompaniment of mothers and expectant mothers. And he emphasized the success of the program:

"It is certainly a successful program, and it will be even more successful when it is being practiced by other countries. And we can finally make sure that every human being is at least eating three meals a day," he said.
