Brazil Celebrates UN’s Role as the Planet’s Peace Keeper

The United Nations is indispensable to world peace, remarked the Brazilian Minister of Foreign Relations, Celso Amorim, on the date of the organization’s 60th anniversary.

"We know that the UN has its limitations, but it is indispensable. Thanks to the UN, humanity has spent the last 60 years in relative peace, and it will be largely with the help of the UN that, in the coming decades, we will have a world that is more just, more egalitarian, and more economically developed," he affirmed.

Brazil has been an active member of the UN since its creation. Brazil is also the country that has served the largest number of terms as non-permanent member of the Security Council and has participated in UN peace missions, such as in Mozambique, Angola, and Haiti.

According to the UN representative in Brazil, Carlos Lopes, Brazil has played an important role in the organization. "Brazil has been an exemplary citizen within the United Nations and has contributed, above all, to the maintenance of peace and development. Hence, it is a country that has distinguished itself in its activities within the UN."

The purpose of the organization when it was created right after World War II was to stabilize international relations and provide a more secure basis for peace. Nowadays it also seeks to reduce poverty and promote economic development, education, and progress.

The UN was created in 1945 to maintain world peace and security and to promote social progress, improved living standards, and human rights. The organization is currently made up of 191 member countries, united behind an international treaty.
