Brazil and Egypt Talk Science and Education Projects

Brazil’s Minister of Science and Technology, Sérgio Rezende, has begun a five-day visit to Egypt. He is meeting today, in Cairo, with the Egyptian minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Amr Ezzat Salama.

The purpose is to discuss cooperation between the two countries in the educational field. Starting Wednesday, November 30, Rezende will be in the city of Alexandria, where he will remain until December 3.

The Brazilian Minister will participate there in the 16th General Conference of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS, from its former designation, the Third World Academy of Sciences).

Earlier this year, Brazil’s Minister of Social Development and Hunger Alleviation, Patrus Ananias, at the invitation of the World Bank, made a presentation to Egyptian government officials on Brazil’s Family Grant Program.

The purpose of the Cairo meeting was to demonstrate international experiences in income transfer programs to contribute to social reform in Egypt, which plans to change its current food subsidy policy.

In Brazil, the Family Subsidy Program transfers income to poor families whose monthly income does not exceed US$ 46 (100 reais). The goal is to combat extreme poverty and social exclusion and promote the emancipation of these families, which receive monthly financial assistance.
