Brazil and South Korea Build Joint IT Research Center

The government of South Korea’s Ministry of Information and Communications has signed a memorandum of understanding with Brazil’s Ministry of Communications worth US$ 1 million for the creation of a Brazil-Korea Cooperation Center for Information and Communications Technology. The memorandum was signed by ministers Hélio Costa and Daeja Chin.

Through the center Brazil and South Korea will seek to set up an information society focused on research, development and collaboration. The center will be located in Brazil and it will operate at least three years.

The two countries will also run an exchange program for experts and technicians. In February a work group will be established to begin to work out the details of the center’s activities.

The Minister of Foreign Relations of Brazil, Celso Amorim, said in May, during a visit of President Lula to South Korea, that commercial relations between Brazil and South Korea may reach US$ 6 to 7 billion in two years.

According to Amorim, current exchanges between the two countries amount to US$ 3 billion, as per the Brazilian estimate, and US$ 4 billion, according to South Korea. The Minister says he does not know the reason why numbers are different.

For Amorim, the trip of the Brazilian delegation headed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva represented the "consolidation of a special relationship," because the President of South Korea, Roh Moo-Hyun visited Brazil in 2004.
