Brazilian Troops Keep an Eye on Haitian Elections

Exactly two years after former president, Jean Bertrand Aristide, fled the country, Haiti will hold general elections today.

At the moment, the Western Hemisphere’s poorest nation is hosting a UN Stabilization Mission led by Brazilian troops.

Brazilians are also among the observers who will be monitoring today’s elections for president, senators and deputies.

They join representatives of the Caribbean Community (Caricom), the Organization of American States (OAS), the UN, Canada, European Union and the United States.

Among the Brazilians are diplomats, four deputies and one senator.

Brazilian troops are in charge of monitoring 88 voting districts in the capital Port au Prince besides four other districts in the south of the country bordering the Dominican Republic.

According to Brazilian lieutenant-colonel Cunha Matos, the distribution of ballot boxes in the area entrusted to Brazil was done without any incident.
