UK Firm to Help Brazil Develop Polymer OLED Applications

Cambridge Display Technology (CDT) has struck a deal to sell inkjet printing equipment to the Genius Institute of Technology in Brazil. The Institute will use the equipment to develop its expertise in inkjet printing for polymer organic light emitting diode (P-OLED) technology.

The Litrex 70 printer is capable of printing on substrates up to 200mm square at up to 120 pixels per inch, and is ideal for research and development of P-OLED materials and devices.

Genius is working with partners: Gradiente, the largest Brazilian consumer electronics company, the Millennium Institute for Polymeric Materials and the Brazilian National Synchrotron Light Laboratory.

In addition to supplying an inkjet printer, CDT will support this group with process know how and training to assist in getting the development line up and running as quickly as possible.

For CDT, Dr David Fyfe, CEO commented: "The Genius Institute has an enviable reputation as a center of technological excellence, and as a key strategic player in the development of supply chains for key technology areas. They have recognized the importance of polymer OLEDs in the development of next generation displays and lighting."

For Genius, Professor Dr. Cylon Gonçalves da Silva, Director commented: "We are delighted to be working with CDT and our partners in the exciting field of P-OLED technology. We believe this is the first step towards future industrial and commercial developments here in Brazil.

"The financial support for this project by FINEP, the funding agency of the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology, shows the support of the Brazilian Government for the initiative. Genius and Gradiente are committed to maintaining a technology lead in key areas with such great potential for consumer electronics."

Cambridge Display Technology is a pioneer in the development of light emitting polymers (P-OLEDs) and their use in a wide range of electronic display products used for information management, communications and entertainment.

P-OLEDs are part of the family of organic light emitting diodes, or OLEDs, which are thin, lightweight and power efficient devices that emit light when an electric current flows.

P-OLEDs offer an enhanced visual experience and superior performance characteristics compared with other flat panel display technologies such as liquid crystal displays, and have the key advantage that they can be applied in solution using printing processes.

Founded in 1992, the company is headquartered in Cambridge, UK and listed on the US Nasdaq stock exchange under the symbol ‘OLED’.

Genius Instituto de Tecnologia is a not-for-profit research and development center, established in Manaus, Brazil. in November 1999, and focused on technological innovation of embedded systems, microelectronics and software.

In addition to the site in Manaus, Genius IT has an office in São Paulo. Their strong characteristic is to work on technological projects and platforms, focusing on the needs of clients and partners.

Genius develops strategic partnerships with universities, research centers and companies around the world, closing the loop among these international entities and Brazilian companies.

The institute serves the global market and develops state-of-the-art projects in the areas of automatic speech recognition, digital signal processing, software and applications for wireless devices, embedded systems, strategies and solutions for Digital TV, advanced DVD and TV platforms.
