Brazil, in Cuba, Lambasts US for Its Interventionist Policies

Brazilian Foreign Minister, Celso Amorim, without mentioning it by name condemned the the United States for interfering in other nations, for not complying with United Nations resolutions and for promoting unilateral actions, embargoes and sanctions all around the world.

Amorim’s criticism of the US happened during a speech by the minister at yesterday’s (September 16) closing ceremonies of the 14th Non-Aligned Countries Summit, in Havana, Cuba.

Amorim said that Brazil will remain firm in the defense of principles established by the non-aligned nations, being favorable to the non-interference notion in domestic subjects and to the quest of peaceful solutions for disputes.

"We condemn all manner of unilateral action, like embargoes and sanctions, or even the use of force non authorized by the United Nations Security Council", said the Brazilian minister.

Celso Amorim defended an increase in interdependence and solidarity among countries, especially in support of African nations, where "women and children live in poverty and abandonment".

The Brazilian chancellor also talked about what he called the double deficit present in the world’s order: democracy and development. For him, the non-aligned countries group is an indispensable force for the support of multilateralism.

"We reject the vision of an international order based in the use of force and in the denial of multilateralism. Our vision of peace assumes social justice, democratic actions and respect for international laws. We are going to remain close to the non-aligned movements in order to turn this vision we share into reality."

Brazil took part in the meeting of the non-aligned nations as a guest country. The encounter counted on the presence of leaders of countries like Venezuela, Iran, India and Pakistan.
