Rio Grande Port in Brazil Has Record Cargo Movement

Brazil exports wheat Located in the Brazilian southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, the Rio Grande Port had its cargo throughput boosted 10.5% in the first half of this year, reaching 13.3 million tons. The volume was the greatest in the history of the port for a first half.

Arrivals at the port totaled 4.6 million tons and grew 10.4%. Shipments, in turn, grew 10.5% to 8.7 million tons. Bulk liquids shipping operations dropped 3%, whereas those of solids grew 18.4%.

The Rio Grande Port cash cow was shipment of agricultural products in bulk. They totaled 4.9 million tons, 22.6% more than in the first six months of last year. The best performance was identified in the shipment of wheat, which grew 335.6%, or 896,000 tons.

Shipments of soy chaff grew 14.4% to 1 million tons, soy shipments rose 7.4% to 2.2 million tons and soy oil rose 1.3% to 256,000 tons. Maize and rice exports through the port dropped, 17.7% and 10,5% respectively, and shipments of agricultural products in bulk grew 31%, to 779,000 tons.

The container movement dropped 4.2%. But the vessel movement grew 4.3%, reaching 1,702 units. Coastwise shipping was the sector that grew the most, 21.7%, with 179 vessels, followed by interior navigation, with 744 units, up 5.5%, and long-haul navigation, with 779 vessels.
