Brother of US Nun Slain in Brazil Tries Again to Take Case to Federal Court

David Stang, the brother of the American nun, Dorothy Stang, who was murdered in February, is expected in BrasÀlia, the Brazilian capital city, today. He will make a request to the highest appellate court (STJ, Supremo Tribunal de Justiça), for her death to be dealt with as a federal crime.

A similar request was denied on June 8. While he is in Brasilia, Stang will meet with the minister of Justice, Marcio Thomaz Bastos.

Last week Stang and a group of concerned citizens were in Belém, capital of the Brazilian northern state of Pará, where the murder occurred because of ongoing land conficts in the region. They tried to get information from local and state authorities on the investigation.
