just came across this tidbit in the news:

BRASILIA, Brazil, March 18 (Reuters) - ...a U.N. human rights envoy invited to study hunger... ...said famine in Brazil amounted to genocide and that thousands were being "assassinated" by malnutrition in a class war.

Ziegler, who arrived in Brazil last month to research famine among the 170 million population, was reported on Monday in the daily Folha de Sao Paulo as saying: "There is a class war in Brazil. Some 40,000 people are assassinated every year, statistics show. For the U.N., 15,000 is an indicator of war.

"The statistics indicate that a third of Brazilians suffer from malnutrition. In Brazil, where the soil is fertile and rich in the tropical climate, famine is genocide," he was quoting as saying. "Who dies of hunger in Brazil is assassinated."

Totally unbelievable!! Who is this Ziegler guy and where do his guts come from? I understand that he is part of the UN but he is mistaken in using such vocabulary to describe the situation in Brazil. Where does the name "ziegler" come from anyways?

Not only unbelievable, but not true. Even in the poorest areas of the Northeast, malnutrition does not even approach 30%. Lack of medical care, and/or inability to afford it is the cause of many more deaths than starvation. Now, if Ziegler believes you have to eat a steak every night to be properly nourished, maybe he is correct about the rampant malnutrition. Not.

Isn't it crazy that this ziegler dude just made up his own definition of "genocide". Who the heck is he to state such a thing? Yo ziegler go back to your own country and tend to your own problems. And while you are at it, make up your own definitions for certain keywords and use them on your own family. You will drive them crazy, if you haven't already.

Pork_Chop's definition of a Ziegler:

"Just another left-liberal, patronizing know-it-all from a supposedly 'developed' country, using sensationalist and provocative language to garner attention to himself, whilest at the same time completely distorting and obfuscating the real facts of the matter in question."

Randy Paul,

Why dont you have anything to say in this column? Well let me see, either you think that it's true that Brazil is genocidal or you think that Ziegler's, an authority figure, words are correct. Either way, it's funny as to why you have not said anything about this.

You are such a little boy.

Coming from someone who doesn't even have the stones to use his real name, your sense of outrage is baseless.

I haven't posted because the issue hasn't interested me. I also happen to have a life. I suggest that you get one.

Yo Randy,

Dumb, Dumber, and Dumbest. I find it hard to believe that you dont have any interest in this post. You just afraid to speak your mind, thinking it's too overwhelming to say anything. How could you possibly not have anything to say about this? You dont make any sense.

Kind of describes your posts.

I don't make any sense? I'll type slowly so that you understand. Grow up little boy, quit whining o little lad of mystery who doesn't have the guts to use his real name.

For what it's worth, I think that famine can be used as a form of genocide and one need look no further than what Stalin did in the USSR in the 1930's. What is happening in Brazil in terms of malnutrition is disturbing, but it certainly doesn't rise to the legal definition of genocide.

Ok, i'm doing a project and one of the things that i have to do is find articles about Brazil and it's famine hunger. I clicked on this one, and I started reading the responses. I was very disgusted by 'Randy' and his attitude. Same goes with 'Leite com frango' who kept provoking 'Randy'. I'm younger then you two, and it seems like i'm way more mature then the both put together. This is meant for debating on the topic posted. Not for insults towards each other. I just thought that I would write this to remind eveyone what this is for, and not to get anyone mad at it. If you are, well sorry but it's the truth, people are being immature when they should act thier age and be mature.
