Bulgaria and Brazil Talk Sports and Diplomacy

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva received the President of Bulgaria, Gueórgui Parvánov, January 12, in the Planalto Palace, in BrasÀlia, the country’s capital.

The two presidents participated in a ceremony in which a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Rio Branco Institute (where Brazilian diplomats are trained) and the diplomatic institute of the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Relation.

The two countries also signed an agreement for sports cooperation between the Brazilian Ministry of Sports and the Bulgarian Ministry of Youth and Sports.

According to the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Relations, trade last year between the two countries amounted to Brazilian exports worth US$ 149 million and imports from Bulgaria worth US$ 59 million.

The principal goods sold to Bulgaria were: iron ore and iron sulfide, beef, and chicken parts. What Brazil bought most from Bulgaria were chemical products such as nitrogen phosphide and ammonium nitrate.

Parvánov is in Brazil for an official four-day visit. In Brasília, he paid a visit to the Brazilian Congress. The Bulgarian President will also visit the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
