Brazilian Blacks Start News Agency to Spread the Word on Them

Afrobras Brazil’s Afro-Brazilian Society for Social and Cultural Development (Afrobras) is going to launch AfrobrasNews on February 1st, a news agency that, according to the organization, should broadcast information about the black population of Brazil and of the world.

According to the organization, the release marks the anniversary of São Paulo, celebrated January 25. In São Paulo, there are 3 million afro descendants, making it the city with the largest black population outside Africa.

Afrobras promotes a series of initiatives turned to social insertion of the black population, and the best known is Zumbi dos Palmares College, a higher-education institution in the state of São Paulo where, according to the organization, 90% of the students consider themselves afro descendants.

The articles published by the agency, according to an Afrobras press statement, will be of interest not only to black populations, but to all those in favor of Brazilian diversity. It should count on material produced in Brazil and abroad. The site has a profile on Twitter.

The group describes itself as a non-governmental organization, founded in 1997, bringing together intellectuals, officials, celebrities, black or otherwise, and aims to work for the socioeconomic and cultural insertion of young Brazilian blacks.

They hold throughout the country, activities dealing with information, training, qualification and technical assistance as well as legal and political affirmative action to insert in the society and make visible blacks from São Paulo and from Brazil.
