Brazilians and Arabs Discuss Cooperation on Social Development

Cairo meetingThis week, one more chapter of the Summit of South American-Arab Countries (Aspa) should take place, in Brasília, where the second meeting of ministers in the social areas of both regions is taking place. The objective is to discuss joint activities.

According to figures disclosed by the Itamaraty, the Brazilian Foreign Office, an “action plan” to be presented to the Brazilian Ministry of Social Development and Hunger Alleviation should be approved.

The plan, according to the Foreign Ministry, is aimed at implementation of proposals for cooperation discussed in the first sector meeting, in Cairo, the Egyptian capital, in 2007.

Among these proposals, according to the Itamaraty, is the establishment of a common Internet platform among the ministries, for exchange of information on social development.

According to the Aspa web page, among the themes to be discussed in the meeting are hunger alleviation, reduction of poverty, social integration, the International Convention on People with Special Needs, protection to vulnerable groups and methods for implementations of the United Nations’ (UN) Millennium Goals.

Brazil is already exchanging information in the social area with Arab countries, especially regarding the Bolsa Família (Family Allowance), a Brazilian government program for income transfer to the poor.
