Brazil Shows Its Best at German Dental Show

This year there will be almost four times as many Brazilian orthodontic equipment and material manufacturers participating in the International Dental Show, 2005 (IDC), considered the world’s largest and most important fair in the orthodontics sector. The fair begins today and will run through Saturday, April 16, in Cologne, Germany.

A joint effort is being made by the Apex (Export Promotion Agency) and the Abimo (Brazilian Association of Medical, Dental, Hospital, and Laboratory Industries, Articles, and Equipment) as part of the Brazilian Medical & Dental Devices Project.

Twenty six Brazilian firms are participating this year, versus seven last year. The Apex and Abimo hope to make 1,200 commercial contacts and close deals worth around US$ 8 million.

The Brazilian orthodontics sector currently exports products to 84 countries. “Orthodontics has been one of the sectors of our association that has stood out most in export quality and performance,” affirmed the president of the Abimo, Djalma Rodrigues.

Last year the sector did a total of US$ 54.2 million in business abroad, 36.7% more than in 2003.

“All of this represents a joint effort made by the sector, thanks to a covenant with the Apex, which has produced good results,” Rodrigues observed.

The biggest buyers of Brazilian orthodontic products in 2004 were (in declining order): Germany, Cuba, Mexico, Russia, and the United States.
