Brazil Calls in China for End to US and EU Farm Subsidies

Some 30 foreign ministers are participating in a World Trade Organization meeting in Dalian, China, with the objective of boosting international commerce.

Brazil’s Foreign Minister, Celso Amorim, says the issue has been bogged down since the Doha Round because of problems in the agriculture sector.

"What we will see here in Dalian is whether or not we will make any progress on trade in farm produce," explained the minister.

"We seek the elimination of farm subsidies by rich nations and greater market access for Brazilian goods."

Brazil considers it fundamental to make progress on the Doha Round, also known as the Development Round, of trade talks.

"That is the only way we can make WTO rules more just," declared Amorim.
