The World Is Bigger than the US and EU, Says Brazil’s Lula

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said that Brazil’s external trading reached US$ 104 billion, a US$ 37.6 billion surplus. The good news was given to Lula by phone by the Minister of Development, Industry, and Foreign Trade, Luiz Fernando Furlan.

“Fresh news, Palocci,” said the President to the Minister of Finance, Antonio Palocci, during a ceremony at the Federation of the Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp), in São Paulo.

For the President, this is the result of a more “daring” external trading policy, which differs from the one previously done in Brazil.

Lula reinforced that government’s policy focus on diversifying commercial relations, expanding partners base, as well as the number of sellers and buyers of Brazilian products.

Lula reaffirmed that Brazil has several options related to external trading, without having to depend solely on the United States or the European Union. According to the president, his government’s decision to go around the world has expanded options.

“Our commercial relation with Africa increased 48%. Our relation with the Middle East expanded 64%, and with South America, 58%. To go even further, we just need to believe the world is much larger than usual relations we used to have,” affirmed Lula.
