Brazilian Police Burns 4 Tons of Cocaine and Marijuana

The Civil Police of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil, incinerated 4.2 tons of drugs, Tuesday, June 28, in Sapucaia do Sul.

The operation, which was carried out in a metallurgical factory, destroyed a large quantity of marijuana, cocaine, and ether spray bottles seized in the state over the past two years by the Anti-Narcotics Department (Denarc).

According to police commissioner, Paulo Grillo, who commanded the operation, this was the largest quantity of drugs destroyed in the state since the creation of the Denarc in 1996.

Officials and agents of the Denarc and the Special Operations Group of the Civil Police were mobilized to transport the more than 4 tons of drugs.

On Monday, June 27, over 1.2 tons of marijuana were seized at the Goio-En inspection station, in Nonoai, in the northern part of the state.

The drugs were hidden in tires on a truck and were being transported by a gang that was under the surveillance of the Civil Police, with support from the Revenue Battalion.

The police had already been alerted that the group would be bringing the drugs from Foz do Iguaçu, in the state of Paraná, to Rio Grande do Sul, for delivery to a company in the Porto Alegre metropolitan area.
