Brazil and G4 Create United Front for UN Reform

Representatives of the G4 – Brazil, Germany, India and Japan – met in Brussels, June 23, and signed a joint declaration saying that a broad reform of the United Nations was necessary in order to strengthen the organization.

The foreign ministers of the G4 signed the document: Celso Amorim of Brazil, Joschka Fischer of Germany, Natwar Singh of India and Machimura Nobutaka of Japan.

The document presents proposals for UN reforms in various areas, such as the inclusion of economic and social development policies.

It also talks about security and human rights, and changes in the Security Council so that it represents global realities today and not those of the world 60 years ago.

The G4 wants to expand both the permanent and temporary (rotating) members of the council with a more balanced representation of developed and developing nations.

The G4 document also reiterated the group’s commitment to the success of the Millennium Summit next September and promised to work for significant progress in that area.
