US, EU, China Discuss Food Security in Brazil

Today the First World Congress on Food Security gets underway in São Paulo. Brazil was selected to host the event by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Federation of Food Industries (IFIF).

Representatives from the United States, Europe, China and Brazil will participate in a total of 80 scheduled meetings that will last for three days.

The focus will be on ways and means to ensure food security. Some of the topics under discussion are: bird flu, mad cow disease, the use of hormones in animals, the Kyoto Protocol and genetically-modified crops.

FAO says it sees Brazil as one of world’s breadbaskets in the year 2050, when the world’s population will reach 9 billion.
