International Economists Discuss in Brazil Celso Furtado’s Work

In commemoration of its 53rd anniversary, the Banco do Nordeste do Brasil (BNB) is holding a forum (Fórum BNB de Desenvolvimento), which will discuss the work of one of Brazil’s most famous economists, Celso Furtado, who died in November 2004.

Furtado had a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Paris-Sorbonne. In the 1950s he worked out theories of economic development and made a profound study of the history of Brazilian and Latin American economic development.

His two most famous books, “Brazilian Economic Formation,” and “Latin American Economy,” were translated into a dozen foreign languages and influenced the French School of Annals (Annales).

The founder and director of Annales, Fernando Braudel, recognized Furtado as an important influence. Furtado also made studies of the United States and European capitalism, which are considered classics.

The event will be transmitted by videoconference throughout the Northeast. Besides Brazilian economists and representatives of the BNB, a number of foreign professors and economists will also be present and participate.
