Brazil’s ProYouth Brings School Dropouts Back to Class

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva participated today in the inaugural class of the National Youth Inclusion Program (ProJovem), in the Northeast Brazilian city of Recife.

In its initial phase, the ProYouth program plans to get 14.4 thousand young people to return to school to conclude fundamental education in nine Brazilian capitals – Recife, Salvador, Fortaleza, Boa Vista, Porto Velho, Florianópolis, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, and Porto Alegre.

The course, which lasts 12 months, will offer classes in informatics and foreign languages, as well as a diploma. Each student will receive a monthly stipend of US$ 42 (100 reais).

The goal of the ProYouth program is to assist 200 thousand students between the ages of 18 and 24 in the 27 state capitals and the Federal District by the end of the year.

The Ministries of Education, Social Development and Hunger Alleviation, and Labor and Employment participated in the preparation of the program.
