Brazil’s Oscar Nominee Is Rags to Riches Tale

The film Dois Filhos de Francisco (Francisco’s Two Sons), directed by Breno Silveira, will be Brazil’s official nominee for the Best Foreign Film Oscar in 2006. As usual, the decision on the film to represent the country was made by the Audiovisual secretariat at Brazil’s Ministry of Culture.

The film tells the story of one of Brazil’s most popular country singing duos, Zezé de Camargo and Luciano.

Francisco’s Two Sons has been a huge success of public in Brazil and a surprise to the critics who didn’t expect more than  a syrupy videoclip about the very popular singing duo, who for the most part are hated by the Brazilian intelligentsia.

The story is more about the singers’s poor father struggle to raise nine children in the interior of the state of Goiás while showing at the same time the chronic Brazilian problem of inequality.

On January 31, the US Academy of Motion Picture will select five finalists for the Best Foreign Film award and the winner will be announced at the Oscar ceremony in March.
