Three Stinging Brazilian Playwrights Re-released in the US

US-based Host Publications is launching the 2nd edition of its very first title, Three Contemporary Brazilian Plays. It includes three groundbreaking dramatic works by PlÀnio Marcos, Leilah Assumpção and Consuelo de Castro.

This Portuguese and English bilingual edition features three of Brazil’s most dexterous and resourceful theater craftsmen.

"With updated biographies and a new introduction, as well as a new preface by Brazilian theater scholar Elzbieta Szoka, this volume will astound readers unfamiliar with Brazilian drama and reinvigorate interest of experts in the field," says Joe W. Bratcher III, President of Host Publications.

Plínio Marcos’ Two Lost in the Filthy Night shows language as the only possession of two paupers living in claustrophobic conditions. The rapid and vigorous dialogue lashes out, enclosing the reader in a brutal game.

Leilah Assumpção, in Moist Lips, Quiet Passion, dramatizes the sexual life of a couple trying to achieve their Big Orgasm. They frame their frustrating sexual games with the dates of the military coups.

In Walking Papers by Consuelo de Castro, a man and a woman interact in fragmented situations bordering on insanity. The obsessive language and the exacerbating rituals of the claustrophobic relationship projects the shadow of the repressive system.

"The translations are effective, the themes are of our time and place and the volume is most worthy for reader and producer alike," says Bratcher.

Three Contemporary Brazilian Plays is available through Ingram and Baker & Taylor or by calling Host Publications at 512-236-1290.
