Brazil Industry Grows 3.3% Led by Autos, Metallurgy and Food

Brazil food The sectors of automotive vehicles, basic metallurgy, and food and beverages have led Brazilian industry sales in July. Compared with the month of June, sales increased by 1.2% in the seasonally adjusted series.

From January until July, sales recorded an accumulated growth of 3.3% in comparison with the same period of 2006, according to the Industry Indicators survey, disclosed by the National Confederation of Industries (CNI).

According to the survey, conducted among large and medium-sized companies of 12 Brazilian states, the sales performance and the positive result of the remaining indicators attest to the expansion of production.

Hours worked in production rose by 0.8% in July compared with June, in the series free from seasonal influences. During the same period, employment rate in the industry increased by 0.3%, and the use of the installed capacity increased to 82.6%.

The CNI survey highlights the fact that the employment indicator has been on the rise for 20 months in a row now. From January until July, the indicator records a 3.5% increase in comparison with the same period of 2006. The food and beverages sector has led hirings this year so far, at a 9.4% expansion.

The rise in employment is being accompanied by wages. The remuneration paid to industry workers, which, in addition to the salary, includes rewards, bonuses, and others, increased by 2.6% in July compared with June, and records a 4.9% increase for the year.

The food and beverage industry is also the main responsible for the expansion in the industry payroll. Remuneration to employees in the segment rose by 15.5% from January until July, compared with the same period of last year.
