Brazil’s Imports Grow 51% Bringing a 37% Reduction in Surplus

Brazil's port of Santos, in São Paulo Exports from Brazil totaled US$ 5.431 billion last week, another one-week record, according to information disclosed by the Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade. Imports reached US$ 3.993 billion, resulting in a trade surplus of US$ 1.438 billion and bilateral trade of US$ 9.424 billion.

In the accumulated result for the month, shipments reached US$ 17.275 billion, resulting in a daily average of US$ 909.2 million, which equals growth of 41.7% over the average for July 2007.

Imports stood at US$ 13.848 billion, with a daily average of US$ 728.8 million, representing growth of 48.8% in comparison with the average recorded in July last year.

The accumulated surplus so far this month is US$ 3.427 billion, with a daily average of US$ 180.4 million, growth of 18.7% compared with the average for July 2007,and of 39.3% in comparison with the average per business day recorded in June this year.

So far this year, exports have totaled US$ 107.92 billion, representing growth of 26.9% in average daily exports, compared with the same period of 2007.

Imports have reached US$ 93.143 billion this year, growth of 51.3% on the average per business day. The accumulated surplus in 2008 stands at US$ 14.777 billion, representing reduction of 37.1% on the daily average compared with the same period last year.
