Brazil and Argentina Discuss Trade Barriers

The Brazilian and Argentinean governments will create a work group to formulate a common industrial policy for the home appliance sector. The proposal arose during a meeting between representatives of the two countries, on January 25, at the headquarters of the National Economic and Social Development Bank (BNDES), in Rio.

Last year the Argentinean government decided to impose trade restrictions on its Mercosur partner in the home appliance sector after Brazil achieved a trade balance surplus.

At another meeting, entrepreneurs from the two countries discussed the importation and exportation of stoves and televisions.

“In the area of stoves, the agreement elaborated by the private sector will be in force until midyear. This meeting was to define guidelines for a future extension,” affirmed the executive secretary of the Ministry of Development, Industry, and Foreign Trade (MDIC), Márcio Fortes de Almeida.

Next Monday, January 31, representatives from the two countries will meet once again, this time in Buenos Aires, to deal with the Argentinean restrictions on imports from Brazil.

“I believe that the meeting on the 31st will end with a final agreement between the two sides. Negotiating is the art of knowing when to make concessions, instead of winning five-nil,” Almeida remarked.
