Despite US Surtax Brazil Should Increase Shrimp Exports

Brazil should export about 105,000 tons of shrimps this year, due to the void in the market left by Thailand and India, countries hit by the tsunamis.

The forecast is from the Brazilian Association of Shrimp Farmers (ABCC). Europe is the market with greatest potential to increase purchases.

On the 22nd and 26th of February the Brazilian companies will participate in business meetings with importers from Europe in the Convention Center in the city of Natal, in the Northeast of Brazil, during the National Shrimp Trade Fair.

The organization of the meetings has the participation of the National Confederation of Industries (CNI), among other entities.

In August, investigators from the Department of Commerce of the United States were in Brazil as a result of accusations of dumping. They visited Brazilian shrimp exporters, NortePesca, Netuno and Cida, all in northeastern Brazil. The US recently slapped a 37% surtax on their exports following complaints by American shrimp industries.

The Brazilian government has announced that if the Americans decide to maintain the surtax Brazil will appeal to the World Trade Organization’s dispute settlement panel.

Brazil says it is not dumping shrimp; on the contrary, it is just more efficient and productive due to favorable climatic conditions and can sell shrimp cheaper.
