Brazil Gets Chile Backing for UN Security Council

In an interview after the meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Chile’s President, Ricardo Lagos, stated that his country has been supporting Brazil’s candidature for a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council since 1945, when the Council was created, and that this support was reiterated by his predecessor, Eduardo Frei.

Lagos praised President Lula’s “wide vision” for “the improvement of the lives of all Brazilian people”.

About the meeting, Lagos affirmed, “I came here to have a wide vision of our relationship that, as President Lula said, must include new realities.

“After the Cold War, the world has become more global and pleads different representations from what we had before. And, therefore, part of the institutions must go through this new reality, get ready for this new reality.”

The Chilean President added, “We don’t want the Organization of American States to be an expression of the Cold War, but of this hemisphere’s efforts toward a globalization with more human aspects and fairer rules.”
