Brazil’s PT Calls on Leaders to Stand Up and Defend Lula

One of the principal conclusions reached at yesterday’s, June 19, meeting of the National Executive of the Workers’ Party (PT), in the city of São Paulo, is the need for the party to defend the government.

The PT leadership decided to intensify its dialogue with public opinion and social movements to defend Lula’s Administration and articulate lists of demands.

“We are a governing party, and we have the responsibility to govern Brazil together with other parties, but the PT is mobilizing its leaders, its activists, and its chapters to defend against baseless accusations,” declared the president of the PT, José Genoíno.

This orientation is contained in the resolution entitled “In Defense of the PT, Ethics, and Democracy,” approved after more than eight hours of debate.

“The best thing for the PT is for there to be debates, plenary sessions, and discussion,” Genoíno remarked. “The PT will defend itself at the same time as it debates with its members and activists. The PT wants the whole truth and will respond to all the accusations. What we don’t accept is prejudgment.”

The document urges “all activists and all PT sympathizers and voters to mobilize and dialogue with society to defend the PT and the Administration.”

It goes on to say: “Each PT city councillor, each state and federal deputy, should transform his (her) rostrum into a space to uphold the values and legacy of the PT and Lula’s Administration.

“Municipal and state chapters should promote political acts and other events to mobilize the party’s activists and friends, informing and clarifying party members and public opinion about the Administration’s actions and demonstrating all their pride in being part of this project and part of the PT.”
