Brazil’s Vaccine for Foot and Mouth Disease Is Effective, Says International Lab

The vaccine used in Brazil to immunize cattle against hoof and mouth disease protects against the type "O" virus identified in the focus discovered in the municipality of Eldorado, Mato Grosso do Sul.

This information comes from the Animal Health Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, which received a communication Monday, October 17, from the Pan-American Center for Hoof and Mouth Disease (Panaftosa), containing the results of tests performed on the Brazilian vaccine.

According to a note from the Ministry, the vaccine is produced by six certified private laboratories. "All the vaccines are tested, batch by batch," said Jorge Caetano, director of the Animal Health Department.

Caetano added that the result announced by the Panaftosa clearly demonstrates the efficacy of the vaccine produced in Brazil. He pointed out that the quality of the vaccine can be altered by inadequate storage or incorrect application. For example, the material must be refrigerated but cannot be frozen.

In the same analysis, the Panaftosa concluded that the virus detected in Eldorado is a type common in South America; therefore, the species is not exotic in Brazil.

The Brazilian vaccine against hoof and mouth disease protects against the three types of virus most common in South America: "A," "C," and "O."
