Brazil in New York Lobbying for Christ the Redeemer

Christ the Redeemer in Rio, Brazil New Yorkers and representatives of the United Nations' (UN) 192 member countries can visit the Cristo Redentor exhibition through June 29, which includes the "Open Arms" documentary and photographs of Brazil's famous landmark.

The exhibition, sponsored by Brazilian Bradesco bank, will take place at the UN Exhibition Hall. The Christ the Redeemer statue, unveiled in 1931, is located at the top of a 710-meter hill, and can be seen from any part of the city of Rio de Janeiro.

The Brazilian initiative in support of the campaign "Vote for Christ the Redeemer. It is a Wonder" is aimed at attracting the 30 million votes needed for the Christ the Redeemer statue to become one of the Seven New Wonders of the World.

Besides the large Brazilian community in the United States, the exhibition intends to make the representatives of the United Nations' 192 member countries aware of the features of the monument that represents Brazil in this contest.

Brazil is also campaigning in Portugal to encourage people there to vote for the monument.

Support encompasses activities by major Brazilian companies and the government, including support from Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Everything is being done to acquire the 30 million votes needed for Christ the Redeemer to be chosen one of the Seven New Wonders of the World.

"There are still 10 million votes needed for Christ the Redeemer to be chosen one of the Seven New Wonders of the World. The events we are promoting in New York and Portugal will encourage thousands of Americans, and Portuguese and Brazilian residents of these countries, who still have not voted for the statue, to join this campaign, which is so important to Brazil, with less than two weeks left to vote," said Luiz Carlos Trabuco, president of Bradesco Group.

Through UNESCO, the UN is supporting the vote coordinated by the Swiss New 7 Wonders Foundation. To avoid the destruction that occurred to the first seven wonders of the world – of which remain only the Pyramids of Giza (Egypt), already guaranteed a place among the Seven New Wonders of the World – the six new monuments chosen will receive grants from UNESCO for their permanent maintenance.

The results will be announced by actor Sean Connery, who played Secret Agent 007, at an event to be held in Lisbon (Portugal), known as the City of the 7 Hills, on the symbolic date of 07/07/07 – which only happens every 100 years – and with a soccer match featuring the best number 7s in the world, led by Portugal's Luis Figo.
