Brazil: Amazon Countries Join OAS in Defense of Environment

The Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (OTCA) and the Andean Development Organization (CAF) intend to sign a agreement next Monday, January 17, in Brazil, making it possible for them to enter a series of technical accords.

This information was furnished by the secretary of the OTCA, Rosalia Arteaga, at the ceremony, January 11, to inaugurate the new headquarters of the organization, in Brasília, the capital of Brazil.

A partnership will also be signed with the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO), in the areas of environment and health.

The Brazilian Minister of Environment, Marina Silva, said in her speech that “the OTCA has a vital role to play in the political organization of this region, which is so important for the planet.

“Certainly this area will become the concretization of an economic, social, and regional development project that will take into consideration the different cultures, peoples, and ways of looking at things,” she emphasized.

The OTCA was the first international organization to set up its headquarters in Brasília.

The permanent secretariat was created in December, 2002, through the initiative of countries of the Amazon region, and its provisional headquarters was established in the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Relations.
