Amazon’s Kindle Now Has the New York Times and Brazil’s O Globo

O Globo in Kindle Among the three largest and most influential Brazilian newspaper Brazil's daily O Globo this week became the first newspaper in South America to publish an edition that can be downloaded and read on the Kindle.

The launch of the Rio de Janeiro daily's Kindle edition was timed to coincide with the release of the international version of the electronic reading device created by Amazon.com, now available in about 100 countries.

The Kindle allows people to download and read e-books and other digital media, such as magazines, newspapers and personal documents.

O Globo said Thursday in its print edition that access to the Kindle version would require a monthly subscription costing about US$ 15.90 or a daily purchase at 99 cents via Amazon.com.

The Brazilian paper's Kindle edition hit the market this week along with similar offerings from The New York Times, the Washington Post, the London-based Financial Times and Spain's El Pais.

O Globo's complete daily edition for the electronic reading device can be downloaded in less than a minute starting at 0900 GMT.

"We are always looking for new ways to provide information and offer our readers the best experience possible. Our presence on Kindle will provide our readers with an innovative way to interact with the content no matter where they are," O Globo Kindle project manager Sandra Sanches said adding:

"With the additional step, we are reinforcing our position that O Globo goes well beyond the role of a newspaper."

The Kindle edition of O Globo brings all the sections of the printed version of the newspaper with the exception of the Classified pages, the Jornal de Bairros (Neighborhood Paper) and Rio's cultural scheduled, all deemed to be too regional for the Kindle's readership. Even pictures from the articles will be shown, but in black and white since the Amazon gadget still doesn't offer colors.
